July 24, 2023 Misfit Monday Post: Misfit Monday, late but not forgotten!! And speaking of not forgotten today's pick is considered by some as the oldest surviving dahlia variety: WHITE ASTER!! This heritage variety 1st hit the market in 1879!! Making it about 150years old! I tried to find out who was responsible for the introduction but have so far failed, however it is known that WHITE ASTER came from Holland. And it's speculated that it was named after the popular, at the time, white china asters. Some also think that upon first introduction it had splits in the petals, which it seems to have lost or maybe it's not the original? If this beauty was classified today it would be a small white formal decorative but in 1879 it was considered a pompon. Here on our farm WHITE ASTER is head of our heritage row and is pumping out the blooms! Of all the white dahlias I grow it is my absolute favorite! I'm very excited to be able to offer this rare beauty to the public next year and help keep it's heritage alive!
