August 14 2023 Misfit Monday Post: Following last week's lead, today's Misfit Monday is the cultivar that did best for me on the horticulture bench this past weekend: PARKLAND RAVE! There was a lot of competition in the small triple class so I was pretty excited to see it got as far as section winner. And the winner of this class went on to be the best in show triple so I can't complain. PARKLAND RAVE is a small lavender incurved cactus introduced in 2005 by Rev James Melvin Rowse. Sadly James passed away the same year PARKLAND RAVE was in the trial garden, at that time James was living in Lynden WA and was a member of the Whatcom County Dahlia Society, he was also a Sr. Judge for the ADS. His mentor was Bill McClaren (hybridizer of "Alpen" "U2" and many other dahlias), who he purchased Alpen Garden from. After his death a few more of his "Parkland" cultivars were released to the public along with 2 "Fairhaven" varieties. In 2014 PARKLAND RAVE won the Stanley Johnson Medal with 119 higher awards and 281 total awards. In my garden this beauty stands about 3.5 feet tall on incredibly strong dark colored stems. It is a show stopper for sure
