November 13, 2023 Misfit Monday Post: Happy Misfit Monday! Last week @santacruzdahlias and @dahliasplease announced that KA's KHALEESI won the ADS Stanley Johnson Medal for 2023! So obviously it's today's Misfit Monday pick! The Stanley Johnson Medal is awarded to the cultivar with the greatest number of higher than blue ribbon awards given in one year (Previous winners excluded). This will be Hybridizer Kristine Albrecht's first Stanley Johnson Medal. Kristine has been introducing outstanding cultivars since 2015, many that meet both ADS judging standards and cut flower ideals. Most of her cultivars are extremely sought after and recently one of her new introductions was sold at an auction for over $400, but don't worry most can be found for much much cheaper.

KAs KHALEESI is a stunning giant informal decorative white bloom (AA-ID-W) introduced in 2019. Named after Khaleesi Targaryen from the popular show Game of Thrones, which Kristine and her son were watching at the time. It was also awarded the Derrill Hart Medal for highest score at the trial garden. It was an absolute pleasure growing this bloom this year and our first bloom was bigger than my toddler lol! Can't wait to grow this one again next year, along with many more of Kristine's introductions.

I had the pleasure of meeting Kristine Albrecht this year at the Portland Dahlia Nationals. She is a very active and influential member of the Dahlia world and has even written a couple books about dahlia breeding, both can be found on Amazon. On top of that she also is one of the founders of the ADS Genome Project, which is currently working on sequencing the Dahlia genome. She is such an inspiration! So congratulations Kristine and thank you for all your hard work and dedication! Look forward to seeing what you do next and growing your new introductions!
