November 20, 2023 Misfit Monday post: Misfit Monday! Was thinking this week should be something of fall colors to represent Thanksgiving, so decided BLOOMQUIST JEAN! and then when researching this beauty I realized it is this year's Les Connell Award winner!!! This award is given to the cultivar with the most total awards in the first 5 years since introduction. BLOOMQUIST JEAN also won the Stanley Johnson Medal in 2021. It is classified as an orange, B sized, Informal decorative; introduced in 2018 by Washington legends Paul and Barbara Bloomquist. The Bloomquists have introduced 100s of blooms since 2000, with BLOOMQUIST DAWN being their 1st. Over many of those years Paul was the President of the Whatcom County Dahlia Society, where he met Jean Heeringa for whom BLOOMQUIST JEAN is named. Jean Heeringa and her late husband Ronald are the hybridizers of the "Vista" line of dahlias. I like to think Jean must be a whimsical charming person to have such a unique fun beauty named after her. Many also like to call this bloom the Lorax's Truffula tree of the dahlias, because it fully embodies Dr. Suess's creative imagination. It is a true wonder of the Dahlia world
