Last year at the 1st dahlia show I ever went to I fell head over heels in love with BADGER TWINKLE! The color! The name!! Flawless to me! Then Miraculously I was able to score a tuber and a cutting to grow this year. At 1st I wasn't overly impressed but as the year went on it got better and better! This last weekend at the North Central Washington Dahlia Society show in Wenatchee I was able to recreate the triple I fell in love with and it almost went to the head table! Literally 1 petal away! But I am still very happy with almost lol. And even more happy with this variety. BADGER TWINKLE is a Miniature Semi-cactus Dark Blend that was introduced in 2005 by John Thiermann of JT Dahlias. BADGER TWINKLE is John's most well known variety but he also introduced 3 other \"Badger\" dahlias along with 5 other dahlias of various names. And possibly more not listed in the ADS. He was also the North American agent for Penhill Dahlias and was responsible for bringing many overseas varieties to the US. He was also a member of the classification committee for the ADS and served on the board of the Midwest Dahlia Conference. And speaking of not forgotten today's pick is considered by some as the oldest surviving dahlia variety: WHITE ASTER!! This heritage variety 1st hit the market in 1879!! Making it about 150years old! I tried to find out who was responsible for the introduction but have so far failed, however it is known that WHITE ASTER came from Holland. And it's speculated that it was named after the popular, at the time, white china asters. Some also think that upon first introduction it had splits in the petals, which it seems to have lost or maybe it's not the original? If this beauty was classified today it would be a small white formal decorative but in 1879 it was considered a pompon. Here on our farm WHITE ASTER is head of our heritage row and is pumping out the blooms! Of all the white dahlias I grow it is my absolute favorite! Today's highlight is actually a repeat that needs updating: LITTLE BEESWING. In the ADS classification guide, this little cutie is listed as Little Beeswings with an S at the end but it is not Beeswings! It is BEESWING. And it is not from Australia (as listed) it is from the UK. Hopefully these changes will be made in the 2024 classification guide. I had the pleasure of learning these corrections from David Brown this weekend at Nationals. David Brown has collected thousands of pictures of dahlias over the years and compiled them into an online library. Definitely worth checking out. And all the pictures are free to use, the 1st and last picture posted here are from David's collection. LITTLE BEESWING is a flame colored Pompon introduced in 1909 by John Keynes. It is one of my absolute favorites and I enjoy bringing it to the shows, mainly to share, as it doesn't meet today's show standards. However this weekend at the ADS Nationals my triple of LITTLE BEESWING made it to the head table as Best Triple Pompon. I could not be happier to have won with this variety. Today's feature flower is the absolutely gorgeous AC TWISP! If this beauty isn't on your wish list for next year add it now! Its twisty pink and yellow petals are outlined with the most perfect pink picotee that is beyond enchanting! I seriously could not get enough of this bloom this year! AC TWISP is classified in the ADS CHD as a small size, informal decorative, light blend (BB-ID-LB), introduced this year by Ken Greenway of Accent Dahlias. Over the past 15+ years Ken has introduced over 100 new dahlia varieties. Many with the prefix AC for Accent Dahlia and many without. When it comes to naming dahlias Ken likes to use names with multiple derivations. Upon asking about AC TWISP's name he replied that Twisp is one of his favorite places in eastern Washington with many memories and also Dick Williams, hybridizer of Skipley Dahlias, is from there. Anyone who has visited Twisp would agree that its beauty is well represented in AC TWISP. I am very fortunate living in the Pacific Northwest to be surrounded by many dahlia hybridizers and at only 7mins away Ken is the closest. Since he has a medal named after him I figured the list must be long! And it is!!! But oddly in the ADS classification guide BETTY ANNE is listed as being introduced in 1928 and all his other introductions are listed 13 years later from 1941-1987 so off I went down a rabbit hole! At 1st I was thinking maybe BETTY ANNE wasn't really a Johnson introduction but then I found an advertisement for it by Stanley in a 1935 ADS Bulletin. The ad claims BETTY ANNE to be a 1936 introduction so I'm not really sure how it got classified as 1928. I also found many other introductions from him in the 1930s that for whatever reason are not classified. Over the years Stanley posted many advertisements for dahlias, with later advertisements using the name Pennypack Gardens. Many of his later introductions were named PENNS... like PENNDAZZLE, PENNSCLASSIC, and PENNSPECIAL. Sadly I wasn't able to find much about who Stanley Johnson actually was other than he was very active in the Dahlia world. At one point was the President of the ADS and he belonged to the Philadelphia Dahlia Society. As for BETTY ANNE it is a petite little pink pompon, that is simply enchanting. In my garden it doesn't have the strongest stems but it definitely pumps out the blooms to make up for it! Can't wait to see her bloom again next year in my heritage garden!! So excited to see what 2024 brings, especially in the way of dahlias! Lots of amazing new introductions are hitting the market this year and I'm excited to say one of them will be BULL'S BLOOD!! I had the pleasure of growing this beauty last year and it was absolutely stunning! BULL'S BLOOD is a medium sized, dark red, incurved cactus, hybridized by Walt Jacenko of Woodinville Dahlias. For those who don't know Walt he is one of the nicest dahlia people you will ever meet. I am very fortunate to have met and become friends with Walt through my home club: Snohomish County Dahlia Society. Walt first started growing dahlias in 2005 after being absolutely amazing by the blooms at the 2004 ADS Nationals show held in Washington. That same year he became a member of Puget Sound Dahlia Society. Fast forward 10 years in 2014 Walt introduced his first cultivar HEATHER, named after his Daughter. After that he brought many other varieties to the Dahlia world including LARISSA, FENYA, and ALYSIA OBINA. Walt doesn't use a prefix but does like to name many of his cultivars after women he greatly admires. However that is not the case with BULL'S BLOOD lol! If I remember correctly his grandson named this flower for him. Which is definitely fitting, as the color of this bloom is extremely dark. A color that can be very hard to photograph. I wasn't sure if this bloom was going to be released this year so I didn't take too many pictures of it but thankfully I did take it to a few shows and have those pictures to share. I actually used it in one of my favorite arrangements this year in Wenatchee and in another at Nationals, where it also scored on the ADS bench. If you ever wanted to grow a dahlia that changes colors every few weeks this is the one for you! I can't believe how different every picture I have of her is! Actually I can because last year at every garden I visited I was constantly asking \"who is this?!\" And the answer was always CAITLIN'S JOY! She was at the top of my wish list for that reason and did not disappoint. Except when trying to find more information about her. No idea who introduced this one and best guess, based on Google, she was introduced in the early 2000s. I did find a lot of information saying that she is a sport of IVANETTI (BA-PR) who is a sport of CORNEL (BA-DR), both hybridized by Geerling from Holland in the 90s. CORNEL BRONZE (BA-BR) is also a sport of CORNEL, but introduced by Smits of Holland in 2004. And then there is ISABEL (MB-DB) another sport of the CORNEL family who looks very very similar to CAITLIN'S JOY. ADS has these 2 classified as both Miniature Ball Dark Blends. Very disappointing for me to not be able to find much more about this beauty, but I still love her! If anyone has any more information please feel free to share. I like to include as much as I can find about the bloom in my post. Sometimes I find out a lot, other times I don't. But I enjoy the search and most of all love to share my findings. I encourage others to do the same and I love to hear what others have found! The stories behind the dahlias are so fun to me. But I do have some theories. 1st is that it is a sport of CHILSON'S PRIDE, they are both BB sized Informal decoratives that look identical apart from color. And CHILSON'S PRIDE is hybridized by C, Chilson which I am pretty sure is Carl Chilson of Olympia, an individual who showed dahlias and is listed in many of the 1940s ADS bulletins. I also have a theory that said Carl Chilson is Carl Ross Chilson from Tumwater Washington (1901-1995) but I have no proof just a hunch by dates. If anyone has any more information on CARL CHILSON please comment or reach out. It is repeatedly one of my favorite whites to grow. And it pares well with many other blooms. There is something about the rounded wispy petals that just charms my heart. IMO ;) It is a gorgeous small sized (4-6in), light blend, informal decorative, that pumps out the blooms! It was hybridized some time around 1954 making it a Heritage Dahlia here at Misfit Dahlias. According to the ADS CHILSON'S PRIDE was hybridized by C. Chilson. Who, after much research, I am assuming is Carl Ross Chilson (1901-1995) of Tumwater Washington. Although finding any more information about him has been really difficult. Most searches lead to the Dahlia named CARL CHILSON (a sport of CHILSON'S PRIDE by Les Connell). I did find a lot of references to a \"Carl Chilson of Olympia\" winning many show ribbons through the ADS bulletins in the 1940s but nothing linking him and CHILSON'S PRIDE. So it's all kind of a hunch based on the timeline of events and locations. I would love to hear if anyone has anymore information on C. Chilson. For now I will just keep on enjoying this bloom. As many have in the past. For a long time it was a great show winner, as Bill McClaren describes in his book. And in 2022 it was still the top of its class with 33 overall blue ribbons. Every road was basically a dead end. ADS classification has EMBRACE listed as an E. Griffin introduction out of Australia from 1999* but no other varieties are listed as E. Griffin. Google did provide me with the name Ted Griffin and also some information about other introductions under the prefix \"SCARBOROUGH\" however the only \"SCARBOROUGH\" in the ADS are from the UK under Weekes. Desperately I turned to the archive of ADS bulletins and struck gold! EMBRACE was awarded the Stanley Johnson Medal in 2005 and a great article was written about the hybridizer Edwin (Ted) Griffin from Australia. Full article included in the last 3 pictures of this post. Definitely worth the read and explains so much. As for EMBRACE in the garden, it is a small bronze colored semi cactus dahlia. For me the overall plant size is about 3.5 feet and robust, covered in beautiful peachy blooms. As for a show bloom it is definitely a winner, as the numbers show. However there are many who feel it should be reclassified as a straight cactus and because of this it sometimes gets pushed back. Regardless it's symmetry and color often outshine its flaws and it wins.
